How users can know new article is published?

I received some kind of response very soon after I published a WordPress post.
How can a user know that I published something without me notifying her? (unless she opened the post in about 5 secs after I published it by a coincidence)
She may use an RSS reader, but it seems I don’t have an RSS request every few seconds.
What else notifications except of RSS WordPress uses? (I didn’t install any extensions specifically for notifications.)
