how to wrap the excerpt?

Is there a way to wrap the excerpt (or post content) in a div or span? I’m trying to put a show/hide function on the excerpt text, but it is ‘loose’ in the plugin id.
I tried address the p tag, but some posts start with other formatting – meaning I’d have to address all possible options!
something like:

<div class=”p4p-excerpt”>
post content/excerpt
</div>
