Hi All. Novice web developer and first time WordPress user here. I have an existing website that was built outside of WordPress. I recently installed WordPress on my web server in the hopes of using it to manage my content. I managed to install WordPress on the server without issue (I think). My existing index.html file is still present in the root directory of my web server, and this is what is displayed when I navigate to my website. When I log in to my WordPress dashboard, I see that I have a lone page, “Sample.” When I click this page to edit it, then click ‘View Page’ or ‘Preview Sample,’ that sample page does not open as expected. Instead, my index.html page opens. What am I missing/doing wrong? Do I need to somehow point my web server to the WordPress content? Or is this a permalinks issue?

    Thanks in advance.

  • Try removing or renaming the root index.html page.

OK I renamed it. When I did so, and refreshed my browser, the WP theme appeared. There is a link in the top right that reads ‘SAMPLE.’ When I click it, my old index.html page appears. Why wouldn’t the sample page appear?

    Site url?

OK this seems to be resolved, but I don’t know why exactly. When I changed the permalinks from ‘default’ to ‘post-name,’ the sample page began to load and display as expected. It might be helpful to note that in addition to my existing (non-Wordpress created) index.html file being present, all of my other non-Wordpress created pages are present in the root directory as well. Perhaps that resulted in confusing WordPress when it tried to load the sample page using the default “?p=2” pointer? An explanation would be nice in case I experience this in the future.
