How to verify a backup?

Hello mirgcire, the best way to verify that a backup works is to test it on a live site, of course that is not what you want to do now. You can however test your backup locally on your laptop or desktop. Here is a tutorial that might help you.

Hi mbrsolution, I followed the tutorial and attempted to restore on my local XAMPP site. However there are major problems. The site actually comes up, and I can see the text, but it has some trouble finding the style sheets.

When I use the chrome dev environment I find that the following 5 files are not found, however I am able to open each of these files in a text editor. However the version does not match on two files: style.css and ajax-login-script.js.

Do you have any suggestions? Thanks!

Hello mirgcire, I can see that the css files that you are having problems with are from one of the default themes “Twenty Twelve”. Did you upgrade the theme lately before your backup? Deactivate the theme and reactivate it again and see if that helps.

I am not sure how to deactivate a theme, just change to a different theme? Also I can’t get to the admin panel. Is there a way to do this using phpmyadmin?

I renamed the child theme to child-hide and opened the site. I then it defaulted to twentytwelve. (I know this worked because I changed the 404 message in the child theme.) But the style sheet was still not found and the admin panel was still 404. I went back to the child them, and again, no change.

Hello mirgcire, can you try a different default theme? There seems to be an issue with your current theme or maybe your wordpress core files are corrupted.

See your second post. That is why i set it to resolve.

Okay, even though the suggestion did not work, it is still the best way to verify a backup. However, the results so far indicate that the backup was unsuccessful. I will open another thread to deal with the current issues.

@mbrsolution: I changed the theme to twentythirteen and the result was pretty much the same, only now it complains about not being able to find the same files in the twentythirteen folders.

I am not sure how the core files could be corrupted since those were zipped up and downloaded from the working installation on my remote host.
