How to utilize the both modes of the Sync function?

  • On the Sync description page (https://localise.biz/wordpress/plugin/manual/sync), two modes or versions of syncing are mentioned: updating strings from a template (a POT or another PO file) and extracting messages from the source code.

    I see the benefit of doing both syncs, however it seems that I can choose the mode just once, upon the language file creation (checkbox “Use this file as template when running Sync”). I cannot change that setting afterwards and I can only do that one kind of Sync for that translation.

    My approach is as follows.

    Initially, I copy the existing “System” translation (in Latvian) to “Custom”, keeping all the existing translations. Then I would do the extract mode of “Sync” in order to add strings that are missing in the public translation, and would translate those.

    When the public (“System”) translation gets updated, I would like to use the new translations. I would like to do “Sync” in order to merge the new translations into my custom one, but I need the merge mode of “Sync” for that. I could just do nothing, and the new translations would be used automatically (if they are new strings in the plugin). But…

    If the plugin gets updated with yet some more strings that are not translated in the public translation, I would need to do the extract mode of “Sync” again, and it would fill all the new strings with the English versions, so the Latvian ones from the public translation would not be used and I would have to translate them manually, even though they are available in the public translation.

    So, in short, I would like to continuously be able to both merge new translations form the public translation file and bring in non-translated strings from the source code.

    Am I missing something and it is an already available feature? If not, then I would propose such feature for Loco Translate.

    I cannot change that setting afterwards and I can only do that one kind of Sync for that translation.

    In the “File info” tab at the top right is a cog icon. Click this to edit the file’s sync settings and the raw headers if you need.
