How to use font awesome in the theme

    Hello, my friend, I’m sorry for the “simple” question, but I don’t know the simple answer ??
    A few years ago I began to use the font awesome on my blog, downloaded the free font from fontawesome.io and I call with a function in the function.php file, and all works well.
    But I would like to know how to use the font awesome inside the theme.
    Do I must call a function or is in default by the theme?
