How to Upgrade Gracefully?

I’ve been using Mesmorize theme for awhile without the Companion. I decided this morning to download and activate the Companion, and when I do, it completely blows away my home page! I’d like to redo my home page using the Companion tools (it looks great!) but I can’t have my existing home page look like boiler plate while I’m playing with this. Is there a way to create and preview the new page / sections without the plugin activation completely wiping out my existing site?
