  • I still like this way.

You upload a nice new WordPress and then drag and drop what you want from the old one. It cleans up a lot of crap that you don’t use anymore.

First backup your wordpress files and database in case anything goes wrong. Then go to tools >> upgrade and click upgrade automatically. wordpress will take care of the rest.

The OP can’t do that, because they are at version 2.6.1. Auto-upgrade only comes into play after 2.7.

So it’s a manual upgrade until at least 2.7, then either manual or auto.

You forgot one very important step – deactivate all of your plugins before upgrading.

This is doubly important if your current WP version is less than 2.8 as many older plugins won’t work with 2.8. Worse case scenario – they can lock you out of your site post-upgrade and/or bring your site down.

So, again, how do you upgrade from 2.6 to 2.8? Do you uninstall 2.6 within your FTP (FileZilla for me) and install 2.8 the same as I did 2.6? Or, can you install 2.8 OVER 2.6, without uninstalling? I suppose as I keep reading, all of the blanks will be filled in, but there are a lot of blanks! Another thing. I was careful to go to the 2.6 compatibility list, and one of the themes, Tarski, caused my whole site to disappear, except for a fatal error message. I uninstalled in the FTP client, and it was fine. Now, when I tried out several other themes, they were all fine, except of course, for the one I wanted, which will not display my NAME! It says Blog Name instead of what I want it to. I read that some artists have extra instructions, but this theme didn’t come with any other instructions, I have checked. Also, it only says it is a WordPress theme, and has no designer’s name on it. Is it possible that the theme is not working because it will only work with a certain version of WP?

    Hi,
Re: Upgrading from v2.6.1 to the current version 2.8.4 without success.
I followed the extend guide religiously, it took ages to manually replace all the files by ftp.
I got to step 9: Run the WordPress upgrade program: but the admin panel looks exactly the same as it did before Step 1: it tells me I’m still running v2.6.1 and need to upgrade. It doesn’t offer me any links to run the upgrade program. I tried entering /wp-admin/upgrade.php and it tells me my database it up-to-date. But the admin panel stills says I’m running v.2.6.1 and need to upgrade to 2.8.4.

    Any help appreciated.
    Thanks
