How to update theme without losing old content

  • Hi there,

    I inherited a website from someone who previous had this job. I know a bit of web HTML CSS coding but WordPress is new for me. I am able to easily update content and know my way around the current set-up. We would like to do a theme update and some redesigning of some pages. How do I install a new theme without losing all of the information from the current website? I am afraid to activate a new theme because I don’t want to lose all of the content we currently have on our working website. There are other posts on here that mentioning save it to a folder and activating it on another domain name, but this is too far beyond me. I had no part of producing the current website other than minimal updates 3 years later.

    A site’s content is primarily stored in its database – not in theme. The theme just controls the site’s layout & presentation.
