How to update permalinks without breaking old ones?

    Hi all,
    On my old server I had to use a dodgy permalink structure – /index.php/whatever

    Now I’m on a new host I want to go with something simpler – but how can I change to “new” permalinks without breaking incoming links and pagerank etc to the old ones?
