How to update from PHP 5.2 to PHP 5.5 or higher?

    I m using the latest version of WordPress, but I noticed that the PHP is always 5.2 for all my websites that I have done. How do I go about updating this PHP to the latest version? Which version has no problem? Many plugins require PHP to be minimum 5.3 and above. Please help as I m a novice in creating my own websites. Thanks.
