How to turn a page into a blog

I’ve found that the following code will work –

<?php
query_posts('cat=18');
while (have_posts()) : the_post();
the_content();
endwhile;
?>

But anywhere i put it, my template ends up messed up. Seems to work tho. Can someone tell me where to put the code?
