It seems impossible to translate the subject of emails sent. In particular the email subjects “Membership Approved” and “Membership Denied”.
I have found these strings in the translation files and translated them into Swedish but it doesn’t matter. All mails sent have the subject in English anyway.

One small “downfall” that I know we have is that we store specific strings in the database, and we’re in a rock and a hard place to try and change that just due to the amount of time we’ve had these settings in place. I am curious if there’s ways, at least for specific translation plugins, to hook into their system and intercept stored options and provide ways to translate, but I haven’t looked into that super closely.

Just as a hopeful quick win, have you cleared out the message settings within our plugin to see if you can get the options removed and see if the internationalization prep work we’ve done at the code level can take over?

Same experience here. The different messages are translatable with WPML (https://wpml.org/documentation/getting-started-guide/string-translation/finding-strings-that-dont-appear-on-the-string-translation-page/#strings-arent-selected-for-translation) but the site keeps showing only the English texts.

@prettiggeleerd if you’re managing to find our string values saved to the database, and provide a saved translation, but it’s still serving english version, then may be worth reaching out to WPML support to check and see if there’s anything you missed regarding their plugin.
