How to transfer domain registration but not hosting?

    Hello! Is it possible to change a domain registrar if I am not changing hosting?

    My domain is registered, and the site is hosted, at Ionos. I am satisfied with the hosting cost but their registration, at $17/yr, can be improved. I am hoping I can transfer the registration to CloudFlare while keeping my hosting package at Ionos.

    If this is possible, where can I find instructions? I know enough to get by but more than enough to get myself in trouble. =/

    P.S. I have other WP issues on the site which I intend to correct once I learn how. I also have this same issue with several sites as well as several unused domains I am looking to sell. So the $8/yr savings I gain by transferring registration to CloudFlare is multiplied by 10. I realize this is not relevant to my question, just filling in some backstory. =)

  • Please contact your hoster. They must allow you to integrate an external domain so that you can access the hosting via this domain. Many hosters allow this, some charge a small monthly fee.

    Some hosts might be reluctant to relinquish your domain registration and thus could be less than helpful. In the end they must allow it. If you encounter any difficulty, contact your intended new registrar for further guidance.

    FWIW, there are some minor advantages to keeping hosting and domain registration under a single entity. Mostly advantages related not being very knowledgeable yourself about server administration. The advantages disappear for those with adequate knowledge. The cost savings could outweigh any benefits and the necessary knowledge isn’t that difficult to learn if need be.

    bcworkz thank you for your insight! I sincerely appreciate it. It’s giving me enough information to feel good about leaving the domain where it is right now.

    Ordinarily I would jump at the chance to learn this and become proficient at it. But lately I’ve got so many irons in the fire that I’ve got to choose carefully how I want to spend my time. All told it will amount to very little $ saved each year. I’ve only got 3 websites impacted. I will, however, transfer the other domains I wish to sell. Those don’t have sites built out. I’m giving myself 1 year of paid registration to get them sold. If they haven’t sold by then they will not be renewed. ?? I’m hoping Sedo is a good place to accomplish these sales.
