Hello all,

I am hoping to get a little guidance on the best way to take my site live. I currently have my site live at the main domain https://www.mainsite.com but I needed to upgrade the theme I was using so it would be responsive. I made a full copy of the old site including database and installed it at https://www.test.mainsite.com with a new wordpress install while I worked on it to make it look the same as the old site. Now I am finished I need to know the best way to remove the .test and have this new site go live while shutting down the old one. Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

I would try using the Duplicator plugin. You can easily transfer your site from the subdomain to the live site with little to no down time.

Thanks. I think duplicator is what I used to clone the site the first time. I thought it may be as simple as “unhooking” the old database and removing the test from my sites url and it would work.

Hi Matthew,

Thanks for responding again. Do those options apply to me since I don’t have the site on a local server, rather I have it on a sub domain? If the duplicator option is the easiest can you let me know how to do it? Thanks again

Hi,

By moving your WordPress website from subdomain to main domain, Ultimately, you are moving WordPress website to one domain to another. Hence, following codex would work for you.

Thanks for all the help, I have another question. Is it possible to go to my main site say https://www.mainsite.com and change the url in the wordpress dashboard to https://www.mainsite.com/old and then go to my test site at test.mainsite.com and change that url to https://www.mainsite.com? Then use the velvet blue plugin to update the urls for images etc.
