How to stop Google Analytics from setting cookies

Context. We are working on complying with the new EU Data Protection Laws.

I used to have GA in stalled. Turned it of long ago.

However I see that my website still sets _ga and _gid cookies. They are GA cookies or? How can this be? And more importantly how to stop it from happening? Thanks for your help.
