How to STAY logged in between main site and WP

I was finally able to get the external auth plugin working, at least with plain text passwords, which is GREAT…. but the issue I am having is that my users are not recognized as being already logged in when they are logged into the main site and then navigate to the subfolder wp blog, or when they login on the wp site and then navigate to the main site…..
I had thought/hoped that was part of the magic of the external auth plugin that it would keep users logged in across the site. Any thoughts/tips how to do this?
