How to 'split up' wp_list_categories() ?

Instead of a list of links to categories, I have a picture and made an image map of it with several hitfields/buttons. Now I want each of those hitfields to get one of the links from wp_list_categories(). I’m not a programmer so I have no idea were to start, but perhaps it can be done with function itself?
