How to speed-up thumbnail / gallery loading

I’m just trying to set my gallery up. I have around 400 posts with featured images therefore 400 thumbs to load on the homepage, where the CM shortcode is placed.
However, everything is quite slow to load. Basically the ‘loading’ animation keeps appearing as I scroll down. So, I have a few questions if you have the time to reply.
What settings do you have in your shortcode on the homepage of your site as that seems to load really quickly.
Do you have any external dependencies loaded directly on your site to speed things up? If so, what are they.
Any other shortcode settings that will speed things up?
