• I have a dedicated server for WPMU with the following hardware:
    i3 CPU / 6GB RM / 1.5TB / high grade motherboard
connecting to a 100MB (both up/down) dedicated boardband (through a router)
    OS: CenTOS
    Theme: Mainly Suffusion

The question is, the reponse of all sites are very slow or even sometimes got overtime message. I have monitored the server… everytime I requested a page (simple or complex) all 4 cpu usages go up to about 40% (from 3-5%) for 1-3 sec and then the network transmittion line might or might not jump up . When it jumped up, my browser got the page. But there are times that it got delayed….long enough that the browser response failed. Most of the time the browser got just the title and very little contents and than wait forever. There are many times that the dashboard behaved the same as ordinary web pages.

I had tried to install cache plugin but the situation stays the same.

Is there any ways to improve the response speed of WP?
I have another system using red5 running on the same server and it behaves very speedy. So the speed issue should be on the WP side.

Any clue? Any suggestions are welcome.

    Thanks in advance.

How many sites on the Multisite?

How much traffic are you getting?

Caching plugins really help, but also optimizing your server for WP (tuning maxservers etc)

Currently there are 3 sites and not even open to public yet. So there would only be 1-2 persons access to the server.

I will look into the maxservers settings.

    Thanks for your advice.

Are there anythings that I should do? Would upgrading to i7 cpu helps?

I’m still on an i6? Maybe? I’d have to double check. But I use 1G of RAM (yes, ONE), for a multisite with 6 sites, two other single installs, and a couple other web apps. On CentOS 5 (I will upgrade to 6 this summer). My load average is 0.15

Now that said, my memory usage is about 80% HOWEVER I’m on a cloud-like host, so you can’t really use that as a benchmark the same way (when I wasn’t, I was normally about 50-60% usage). Cloud memory is … weird.

    I would read these:
    https://www.earnersblog.com/vps-optimization-guide/

There’s another one I can’t find right now, dang it…
