How to setup slide show with feature image

I am setting up a site for my wife so that she can blog and show off her items. She has 7 different “parent” categories and on the portfolio page, the featured image shows the different categories. What I want and having troubles setting up is that when you click on the featured image, I want that pop up to bring up a slider and show about 4 or 7 different images that cycle through and show a general idea of what can be found in these 7 categories.

For example, one of the categories is about emotions and feeling. What I want is when someone clicks on this topic, it will show four images describing emotions and feeling such as calm, feel safe, frustrated, and hungry.
