I don’t know> never used any of those frontpage plugins. If I need the contact of a Page in the front I use get_a_post plugin and still the blog structure is intact.

Is there a way to remove the post category/date info at the top of a static page?

If you have a page.php template in your theme – just edit it. If you don’t, create one and edit it.
