• Hi,

I have a lot of categories on my website, and these categories can be further grouped into 2 different groups. For simplicity, imagine I only had categories of different dog breeds and different cat breeds. Now, all these categories can further be grouped into a “dog breeds” and “cat breeds”. All these are parent categories, I do not wish to create children categories.

How do I go about essentially assigning all my categories into 2 different groups?

I want to do this because I want to create a “Recent posts” and “Recent categories” for each one of them. So for example. the “dog breeds” group will show recent posts and categories I have assigned to that group and the “cat breeds” will have it’s own recent categories and recent posts.

Is there a plugin for this or anyway to do this?

  • Hi – If I’m understanding you correctly – You can manually do a bulk edit to all of your posts to move them into two categories.

You’ll want to create the categories first.

Then go to Dashboard >> All Posts

On this screen you can edit 20 posts at one time.

Check the box next to “Title” and just above it you should see “Bulk Edits” Select “Edit” from that dropdown and click Apply.

This will allow you to move (or remove) all of these posts to a specific category quickly and easily.

Is this what you’re trying to accomplish?

    Hi,

Thanks for the reply! And no, that’s not what I’m trying to do. Let me explain again.

I have many categories, and I want to further group all these categories into 2 separate things.

    For instance, say I had categories named (comma separated): A, B, C, D, 1, 2, 3, 4

I want to further group these categories, say into, something called letters, and something else called numbers.

So all the categories named: A, B, C, D will be grouped into something called “letters”
All the categories named: 1, 2, 3, 4 will be grouped into something called “numbers”

That’s essentially what I want to do, to be able to further group my categories into separate things.

Once I have my categories separated into 2 distinct groups, I’ll then want to be able to ‘call them’ and use functions like the recent posts, recent categories, etc.

I understand. So why not just make a “Parent” category called “Letters” and move all of the A, B, C’s into it.

Then create a “Parent” category called “Numbers” and move 1,2 3’s into it?

You can do this by going to Dashboard >> Posts >> Categories and Adding New.

You’ll have to go into each of your existing categories and make them “child” categories assigning the “parent”.

    Does this fix the issue?
