How to sell variable length/size products?

    I sell some raw metal stock to customers. This can be of variable lengths or sizes.
    Currently I get the customer to change the qty to purchase the length they want.
    For example, 1 = 100mm long. To buy 500m set qty to 5.

    This works fin in respect of managing stock, but it fails in respect of the freight calculator. The freight calculator works out that 5 x 10mm pieces fits fine in the smallest courier bag I have. However the reality is it is 500mm and freight is way off, or even impractical.
    So my current method works for stock control, but fails in freight calculation.

    If I use variable products I can get correct freight calculation, but it will fail for stock management, a for example a 500m long variable product needs to decrement the stock by 5.

    What are others doing to sell such items?
