How to Safely Update WordPress

  • We currently have WordPress version 3.8.1 and see on the Dashboard that version 4.4 is available and prompts me to click to install. Our WordPress is is running on a self hosted server and I have never updated it. I hesitate a bit in clicking on the install link, as I am not sure what precautions I should perform first.

    Should I somehow backup WordPress first before updating it? If so, what is the best way to backup it up?

    Are there any horror stories from the community in terms of having things fail when updating WordPress?

    When going from version 3.8.1 to 4.4, what are the major differences that I should expect on the new version, and will I have to update all of my Plugins?
