how to return to the same tab when clicking browser's BACK button

In one of my tabs there is a link to an external site. When a user follows this link and then clicks their browser’s BACK button, they return to the main tab not to the tab they were before getting to the external site. Is it possible to make sure that they return to the same tab they left?
