how to retrieve site after switching URL

    I’ve been building a site at a temporary IP based URL. The domain name was pointed at the site earlier and I entered it into settings using the dashboard and am getting a 404 error when I go to the URL. I’ve backed up the site and the database using Cpanel, but I’d be deeply grateful for some advice on what to do next. Can I change the database or FTP a file to the server that will correct the error?

    Consider using phpMyAdmin to make sure your wp_options table has the correct values in siteurl and home.

    siteurl is your WordPress address (URL) and home is your Blog Address (URL).

    Many thanks. I’m looking at the Wp_options table and the siterurl is correct and I’ve just changed the ‘home’ field to the root URL as the site was installed in the root (it was showing the old temporary IP based site address) and that hasn’t fixed the problem. Any further thoughts would be much appreciated.

    Hi Michael,

    Just wanted to say thank you. I was having the same trouble as Joezy (and someone else in another post). I had changed the URL to my root directory (without reading FIRST, of course). I found most of my solution in Changing_The_Site_ URL as you mentioned above. The Quick Fix Method brought it back, but not all the 404 error messages when I tried to view individual posts. I then applied the Relocate Method and everything else seems to have come back, except the last post I made (which was just before I go myself into the mess). For some weird reason my login didn’t work, so I reset the password and after being able to now login I also accessed the Administration-Settings Panel and verified that my url was indeed the site URL. Seems to be working fine so far.

    I’m able to log in via the temporary URL at the site, but tt turned out that the problem is due to the ISP which controls the URL pointing it at the site (which is hosted by another ISP) but not, it seems, changing the nameservers. We want the URL to remain under control of the current provider while the hosting is provided elsewhere AND for the current ISP to retain control over the organisation’s email.

    I have a couple of sites (including a WordPress.com one) which have URL/domain name control and actual hosting at different providers so I know that that’s possible. Does anyone know whether it’s also possible to keep the mailserver/email control with one provider while hosting the site elsewhere?

    I appreciate that this isn’t a WordPress issue but I’d be very grateful for any help with this.

    I believe you can configure your DNS MX (mail exchange) record to be a different server.

    Please consult your domain registrar service for additional help.
