Disclaimer: I’m not a “WordPress guy”. I am a seasoned web developer and server admin, though. In the past, the few times I’ve needed to migrate a WP install to a new server, I’ve manually copied the files and dumped the MySQL database then restored to the new server.

I have a new client with 2 old WP sites and no access to the server. The SSL certs are invalid. I have WP admin login access and the All-in-One WP Migration plugin is installed and working.

I successfully downloaded the .wpress export file for both.

I don’t understand what to do now. I can’t just unzip this .wpress file to manually copy the files and import the database. I see the convenient “Import” feature of the plugin, but isn’t that cart before the horse? To use that, I’d have to install the same old version of WP and install the plugin, THEN I could import the backup. Right?

I really just want the files. I found the wpress-extractor tool (https://github.com/fifthsegment/Wpress-Extractor), but I don’t run Windows. I’m 100% Linux. DOH!

Anyone have a recommended strategy for me?

On the new website, follow these steps:
    1. Install WordPress
    2. Install the plugin
    3. Import from file then select the file that you have exported
    4. Follow the process until it imports the file
    5. Done

To extract a wpress file, you can use Traktor

Thanks for taking the time to reply, @yaniiliev! I did exactly those steps and it worked. I guess my concern was that if the backed up WP was on an older version of PHP or MySQL or WP that it would not import correctly into a latest version configuration.

That probably is a real concern, but in my case, the 2 WordPress instances I needed to migrate were relatively current.

To help those who come later, are there any guidelines for migrating an older system to a new system? What are the caveats and recommended solutions?
