  • Hi, @ukpaltd. And what is the specific fatal error that you’re seeing in this case?

this is all witchcraft to me , i now told the following ?
We further check and it looks to be a problem with the theme. The /logfiles is now showing actual errors the server is throwing out which are as follows:

[Sun Aug 21 13:24:34 2016] [warn] mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare the_post_thumbnail_caption() (previously declared in /home/linweb09/u/ukprestigeautomobiles.com-1049367348/user/htdocs/prestigecars/wp-includes/post-thumbnail-template.php:244) in /home/linweb09/u/ukprestigeautomobiles.com-1049367348/user/htdocs/prestigecars/wp-content/themes/prestige/functions/11_other.php on line 99

[Sun Aug 21 13:24:42 2016] [warn] mod_fcgid: stderr: PHP Fatal error: Cannot redeclare the_post_thumbnail_caption() (previously declared in /home/linweb09/u/ukprestigeautomobiles.com-1049367348/user/htdocs/prestigecars/wp-includes/post-thumbnail-template.php:244) in /home/linweb09/u/ukprestigeautomobiles.com-1049367348/user/htdocs/prestigecars/wp-content/themes/prestige/functions/11_other.php on line 99

    Hi,

Your theme is using the same function name as one of WordPress’ core functions.

To fix this you’ll either have to manually edit your theme files, or change to a default theme until an update is available for the theme you are using.

To manually edit the theme, you will have to edit the file in 11_other.php found in wp-content/themes/prestige/, on line 99 it should say function the_post_thumbnail_caption() {, you will have to remove this up to the closing } (they come in pairs).

Alternatively, to switch to a default theme, you will have to use an FTP client, or your hosts File Manager tool to change the name of the prestige folder found in wp-content/themes/ to something else (personally I just add .old to the end of the folder name), this will make WordPress use a default theme instead.

Marius thanks for that, I was able to trace the issue using the error logs generated. It was due to a function (command) that is being declared by 2 different files for your website. Since the 2 files are telling our servers to do the same function, it has generated the error. I have amended one of the 2 files so it does not have to declare the duplicate function and this has now resolved the issue
    thanks for help

Thanks a lot for that. It was a different theme I was using and the line number was different but it still worked perfectly. Crazy how this happens. Thanks for posting this. It helped a lot, as I didn’t need to restore from backup.

I know this was resolved for the above….but not for me. After attempting to update older version of Word Press all I get is a fatal error. I can’t get to any dashboard, etc. Every attempt results in this sting on a blank white page:

Fatal error: Cannot redeclare the_post_thumbnail_caption() (previously declared in /home3/donna/public_html/wmup.org/wp-includes/post-thumbnail-template.php:244) in /home3/donna/public_html/wmup.org/wp-content/themes/wmup/functions.php on line 50

How can I get to somewhere to change themes, etc? Please help! My site is completely down.
