• Hey guys,

Although I can design a pretty nice WP site, I am clueless when it comes to anything on my server as far as changing things around.

Here’s the situation….. I have website “AAA” that has been up and running for a few years now. I wanted to keep site “AAA” running while I designed a new site we will call “BBB”. I created an add-on domain to design site BBB and I had an available URL I wasn’t using so I pointed that URL to site BBB. I then installed WP and it looks great. Now Im ready to start using site BBB instead of AAA??

How do I get site BBB in the place of site AAA? Do I need to copy the whole thing over in the place of site AAA? Is there an easier way?

    Thanks in advance !!!
    JT

  • Hello,

Copy the new theme you designed from BBB Website to AAA Website. Then activate the new theme in AAA.

I think you mean to say “along with” or “beside” for development, yes?

How do I get site BBB in the place of site AAA?

After developing BBB, you would either use it to replace the AAA site or your would re-assign or re-direct the AAA domain to the location of the replacement site.

Do I need to copy the whole thing over in the place of site AAA?

No, not necessarily. To copy, clone or move a site, you need its database, /wp-content/ folder and contents, wp-config.php and possibly .htaccess…and then all remaining wp-folders and wp-files.php would/could come from a fresh WordPress download.

Clarify exactly what you are wanting to do here and we can give you some additional details related to database updates to make things work after either a database or /wp-content/ has been moved.

    My current site is https://www.jcharlesthompson.com.

I have designed a TOTALLY new website on an addon domain at https://www.michigan-photobooth.com, which will be the NEW jcharlesthompson.com site.

I want the https://www.michigan-photobooth.com site to be https://www.jcharlesthompson.com and the current jcharlesthompson.com site to be gone.

That’s as clear as I can get.

    Yes, clear as a bell!

    https://www.jcharlesthompson.com’ site to be gone.

addon ‘https://www.michigan-photobooth.com’ site the NEW ‘jcharlesthompson.com’

Question: Did you intentionally remove the www. from ‘jcharlesthompson.com’ there or was that just an oversight while typing?

Assuming ‘jcharlesthompson.com’ is your Primary Domain, I would guess it can only be assigned to the folder (directory path) where it currently lands. Then as an Add-On Domain, ‘michigan-photobooth.com’ can remain just as it is or you can do any of several things with it other than keeping it active or “live” since duplicate content would destroy your SEO ranking for both sites.

The complication you have going here is the matter of ‘jcharlesthompson.com’ being unavailable for the duration of the move if you move (copy) the new site to “root” after having deleted the current ‘jcharlesthompson.com’ /wp-content/ folder and contents and then exported/imported the new database and then edited that database and the ‘jcharlesthompson.com’ wp-config.php file to match each other in the new location.

There is a way you can simply redirect ‘jcharlesthompson.com’ to the new site and have it up and running in much less time…and then you would actually still have both installations in place and you could *then* do the “move” without being rushed and then ultimately let ‘jcharlesthompson.com’ again land where it lands right now.

How much are you concerned about downtime?

I forgot to include the www, yes.

Im not too concerned about downtime for a few hours or so, or even a little longer.

Maybe I should hire someone to do this……

    Lee???? lol…

Forum policy prohibits solicitation here, but I have occasionally found outside help for myself by clicking around a bit.

Moving a site is not all that difficult if you do things methodically and pay attention to all the details. You first make backups of anything and everything to be changed or moved, then clear the space and do the import (database) and uploads, then update the database and edit wp-config.php. If you can find your way around in File Manager and edit things, you can do it…and one or more of us here can walk you through it.
