• When I change the permalink settings to ‘Custom structure’ and save changes, I see a message – “Permalink structure updated. Remove write access on web.config file now!”. How do I do this?
    Thanks.

i dont see whats the problem .. i mean it does work after this message right?

Normal setting is 644 which means that owner that is you can read and write group and public can only read you can change it 444 that will mean you will not be able write on file until you change the setting.

644 works fine as long as your user name and password for your host account are secure.

I do not know about window server as I have never used one but you should be able to change where your files and folders are.
