How to reference absolute path to root from themes folder?

I’ve got a php file in my theme that needs to include files at the root of my wordpress install… but I can’t seem to figure out the relative path.
This works:
../../../../wp/file.php

but why doesn’t root relative path work?
/wp/file.php
nor
/file.php

So how do I do it?
