• Hello,

I am a longtime WordPress user with a backup of a site from 2015.

I would like to regain access to this site and recover it.

I tried copying over all the files and running it, but the version of WordPress required PHP 5.6 and is incompatible with PHP 7.

I only need PHP 5.6 temporarily long enough to upgrade the old site to the latest WordPress version.

How can I achieve this? I haven’t found any hosts (my previous host were Dreamhost and WPEngine) that will support PHP 5.6.

I also tried installing PHP 5.6 on a Debian 9 vps, but I couldn’t find any older version of PHP in the package repos. Same situation on Debian 8.

Is there a way to do a manual upgrade?
Is there anyway for me to recover this old site from the backup?

Install a fresh version of WP as well as the necessary theme and plugins (all current versions) someplace. Once the site is working with the “Hello, World” content, restore the old database in place of the new, empty-ish one and you should have your site back. WP will update the database to the latest version when you first access your site.

I have done *exactly* that, but I received a “Database error” error when I tried to load the site.

Verify your DB settings, including the $table_prefix variable in wp-config.php.
