How to re-arrange product categories?

I’m trying to re-arrange my parent product categories, which for some reason have been messed up during a large import.
I would like the parent categories ordered alphabetically (A-Z) however doing this manually by dragging/dropping each category on top of each other is pretty much impossible, since all of the child categories are shown.
What I am left with is a list of 1100+ total categories and seemingly no easy way to drag and drop the incorrectly placed ones in to a correct spot.
Having a list that large open nearly crashes my browser when I attempt to drag/drop through 1,000 displayed items.
Surely there must be an easier way?

Ideally I would be able to collapse all child categories, to make moving the parent categories up/down easier.
