How-to question for categories

  • I have been searching for around two hours on the WP forums and read a LOT of posts regarding the desire to have categories pull up a list of titles instead of pulling up a huge dump-load of entire entries… and either 1. no one seems to know exactly how to do precisely that or 2. their ways of getting it done are so technical that I am completely lost in the php of it all…
    On this thread, jamitch states:

    The ability to display posts by Title, linked to the individual post is of great advantage when users would log to simply browse the site, and review information that looks interesting. As an example, movie reviews. If an entire category is dedicate to movie reviews, wherien each post is the review of a particular movie. Scrolling through a list of titles is much easier than scrolling through an entire text dump of the category.

    and that is precisely my goal.
    Here is an example of what I’m after. Dooce.com is powered by MT and I am going after the same thing in WP, but it is proving quite difficult to achieve (most likely due to my non-existant-understanding of php!) and I am oh-so-confused!
    Could someone knowledgeable and in simple, easy-to-comprehend english explain step-by-step how one would go about getting their categories to link to a title-and-date-only page using WP 1.2?

    That’s a bit more complicated than what I’m after. I would just like a page of titles (as links to the particular entry they represent… and dates would be nice, too) to come up instead of the entire every-single-entry-ever-written-in-that-category coming up.
