How to prevent / disable a website from being visited while working on it?

Hi,
is there any built in mechanism in wordpress to set up a work in progress type of thing while the site is under developent, while allowing at the same time some user to access it and see how it is developing? I see that there are plugins that do this, but I wonder if this is possible/easy to do without using any of them.
