How to post galleries in front page

Hello everybody
I just installed wordpress a couple of weeks ago
I am photographer so my purpose is to set up a photo website

my idea is
1) post a big size image in home page, the last i posted (in a gallery) that change according to what is the last pic added, like sad before
2) posting galleries, just below, in the homepage, in small thumbnail

i know there are plenty of themes that do this. but is possibile to customize them, adding galleries with nextgen and making them appear in home page? or u suggest me to buy a cool photographic wordpress theme?
