tl;dr: What keyboard shortcut to use or steps to perform to get large block of text pasted into Gutenberg and have it split into separate paragraph blocks based on end of line?

    —-

Just wanted to paste a 200 lines / paragraph long text into Gutenberg and no matter what I tried, I always resulted into having all 200 paragraphs pasted into single paragraph block, where I (naturally?) expected to have 200 paragraph blocks instead.

My pasted text was 100% unformatted, because I was pasting it after copying from Notepad++.

Notepadd++ offers changing line-end characters on-the-fly (between Unix, Mac and Windows), though I don’t know if that covers pasted text as well or only a saved file? Anyway, I tried to paste text from Notepadd++ three times, changing line ending settings from Windows to Linux/Unix and then to Macintosh. No result.

I have ended up pasting this text line-by-line (yes, I have pressed Ctrl+C / Alt+Tab / Ctrl+V / Alt+Tab two hundred times). But this is madness, of course.

    Questions:

    1. From where to paste text (Word, Notepadd++, website)?
    2. What kind of text to paste (formatted / unformatted etc.)?
    3. How to paste text (what keyboard shortcut to press, how to prepare Gutenberg, what to click in WordPress, what steps to perform)?

To have 200 lines of text copied from source pasted to my blog post as 200 paragraph blocks. And not to have all this huge text in a single block?

Formatting maybe ignored, I don’t care. But I need to have it in Gutenberg with exactly the same number of lines / paragraphs in Gutenberg as I have in Notepad++ / Word / source. Thank you.

    Hi There!

Sorry you’re having pasting issues. It is definitely expected that when you paste a large text, it’s automatically split into blocks.

This is the first time, I see this kind of issues, so I don’t really know why it doesn’t work for you. Potentially some editor/blocks plugins could affect the behavior.

    – Would you mind sharing the content you’re trying to paste?
    – You can try disabling plugins if you have any to rule out potential conflicts?

    Thank.

Hello and thank you for your support.

I managed to figure out what is wrong. It is nothing wrong with my WordPress, plugins or Gutenberg. There’s a problem with me! ??

I wasn’t aware that paragraphs must be separated with two lines (i.e. one empty line) in order to have them pasted as separate blocks of text. When there’s no separation (no empty line), Gutenberg pastes it as single block of text.

And should be doing this. Because this makes pasting lists a lot of easier.

I am marking this as resolved. Thank you.
