how to parse exported xml file for translatable text

I′m a absolute(!) newbie so please bear with me. I have tried to find the solution by searching but to no avail.

I′m a translator. I have a customer planning to publish a multilingual site (one language is ready) through WordPress. She thinks it will be necessary to copy&paste everything manually into a Word document and then send that document to me to translate. I think that there must be a better way.

Most threads on multilanguage problems I have found focus on how to setup the different languages with qTranslate or WPML or 2 independent WP setups but as it not my site I can′t influence that. If I understand correctly she has already decided to use the 2 setup solution.

But if I understand correctly (?) she should be able to export all content in the first language by means of Dashboard->Tools->Exports?
Is that so, regardless of the setup she is using? Or is it only valid for more simple sites with only blogs? (This is a complete web page.) What about database content?

Second question: Today, I installed wordpress at my own host just for testing, wrote some dummy text and then used the export function. The resulting xml looks good enough for me, but I would need to distinguish between xml nodes containing text to be translated and nodes that should not be touched. I can do that with a parsing filter, but I would need a listing pointing out those nodes. By looking at the xml I can see e.g. that nodes like <title>…</title>, <content:encoded>…</content:encoded>, <wp:post_name>…</wp:post_name> etc. should be included but perhaps there is some ready made definition/listing of all those nodes?
