• I just made the jump to 2.2.2 and now have the capability to have the widget bars. Up until now, I have manually modified the theme to add/delete things to the left and right side bars.

Is there a How-to or something that explains the relationship of this new widget function and being able to manually add things? Can I for instance, still add Amazon Media Manager plugin to my sidebar, even though it is not in widget form, or will this do something unsocial to the widget function?

  • When you use widgets – nothing that is hand coded in the sidebar will be displayed. (BTW, I doubt you could add/modify anything in the sidebar by editing the stylesheet!)

You can use the available widgets, like Text widgets to add your ads or special code, images whatever.

    My bad… spreadsheet.

I understand how the widgets now work, but what I want to do is add stuff the old way. Can I do this without breaking the widget function.

For example, the plugin Amazon Media Manager is not in widget form. Can I still use this, or do I now have to only use widgets in my sidebars?

    1. I’d suggest read again my previous post.
    2. Add to it: you will need PHP widgets (and not text widgets) to be able to use PHP code in your widgets.
    3. You can add anything in the “old way” if you put your stuff outside of the dynamic sidebar code.
    4. You can combine widgets and “old way” by #3.
    5. Allegedly, there is a plugin to kill the widgets function…
