How to make WordPress do my bidding

I’m totally new to WordPress and to web design etc although have done graphic design and used a CMS. Am drowning in tutorials at the moment so thought it would be easier to come and ask. I’ve installed WordPress in order to set up a few simple pages for myself as a musician (about me, events, music page, contact etc).

I want a very simple plain black theme with white text in Courier. Could live with yellow-gold coloured headers. Haven’t been able to find a theme quite like this.

I don’t want it to look like a blog, so will want to get rid of the bloggy home page..

Would quite like to be able to put a banner across the top, although I could live without this.

Can I achieve all this without paying someone to do work for me, and if so how? Thanks.
