• Hello,

I am using latest version of WP. I want to know how to make backups of my site? I read some guides but didnt get one or other part of them. My host is using Cpanel. It gives four options in backup; home directory, database and two email related options.

To my understanding i need to backup home directory and database. These two things will be enough to restore my site if god forbid it gets hacked ever? or i need to backup anything else too?

    Thanks

    Thanks for the link Clayton.

So i need to backup two things; database which can be downloaded via cPanel. Now the part left is files, this is the part i couldnt get even after reading the article.

To my understanding, backing up the home directory from cpanl will do the files part, right?

    That’s pretty much it.

The goal is a lot simpler than it might seem at first. Whatever directory your WordPress files are stored in, the contents of that directory are what you want to backup (simply copy them to another location). If your files are located in /home or /public_html, or however it’s named on the server, then the easiest thing to do is just create a folder on your local computer, name it appropriately, and copy the entire contents of /home or /public_html to that local folder. You can do that pretty easily with any ftp client or directly from the control panels file management program. Basically it’s the equivalent of just doing a copy and paste of the contents of one folder to another, except you’re actually transferring copies of the files from your server to your local computer.

Here is a little more information on using ftp clients and file transfer in general. It includes a cPanel reference as well. FTP Clients

Open your WP Dashboard, click Tools, Backup and select your options. Make sure you scroll down and make whatever changes in the Backup Options and Scheduled Backup sections you want.

That’s a negative. We’re discussing backing up files and directories from a web space on a self hosted WordPress site using the cPanel/file manger or ftp method – although I’m sure any backup solutions offered by plugin options are also worth investigation, depending on your preference.

Point well taken, BUT the reason I put my two cents in is that I have found that the automatic, scheduled backup works better than trying to remember when/if (at least for me).

I agree with you 100%. I think it can be a HUGE time saver. It’s a nice option to have. What I was really trying to do, (perhaps a little too subversively) was to prompt you to actually share the name of plugin you were providing the instructions for.

    …guess I wasn’t being as clever as I thought I was!

    ??

No prob. I’m a little thick sometimes.

The plugin I use for backup is “WordPress Database Backup” by Austin Matzko.

    Hope this helps.

@davejampole, thanks for the guidance. Trouble is, when I click on Tools I am offered no Backup option at all.

    Any thoughts?

You have to install the “WordPress Database Backup” by Austin Matzko plugin first.

Thanks for your input guys. I prefer making backup from cpanel since i’ve to backup my vB forums too.
