How to make widget areas in my theme?

I am currently working on my very first theme, and it’s a modified version of Kubrick. In Kubrick there’s a sidebar where you can add widgets like search and the like. What I want is to add another such widget area next to my horizontal menu, so I can move the search widget up there instead. So how can I do this? (I know close to nothing about PHP by the way).
