• Hey everyone…. newbie here.

Just installed Sela and am trying to get some things to show up. Do I need to install a plugin to get the social icons to show up in the footer like the demo site? If not where in the dashboard would I find it to turn these on?

  • Hi @blmahon,

The icons in the footer can be added by following the steps here:

    • Navigate to Appearance > Menus in your WordPress dashboard.
    • Select the option to “create a new menu.”
    • From the main panel on the right, enter a name into the “Menu Name” field and then click on the blue “Create Menu” button.
    • Under “Menu Settings” check the “Social Links Menu” location, as shown here:

    • Select “Custom Links” from the list of options on the left and then enter the URL to one of your social media profiles.
    • Add the custom link to your menu.

If you have the Jetpack plugin installed then the theme will automatically convert the link into a clickable icon, depending on the specific social profile you’re linking to.

Hope that helps out! We’re right here if you have any extra questions, too.

Thanks Siobhan for your clear instructions!

I just wanted to mention that Jetpack isn’t needed to display the social menu icons, though it is needed in order add a site logo, and to add testimonials, the Custom Content Types module in Jetpack must be activated.

Let us know how it goes!

It seems I am having issues with jetpack…. I’ve submitted a support request here..

As I said, you don’t need Jetpack to use a social menu.

Did you try setting up your custom menu as Siobhan explained? Where are you getting stuck? Could you provide a link to your site?

In searching for support on creating menus with custom links to add social icons menu… when I ran into a support tutorial (https://en.support.wordpress.com/menus/) that showed a different looking dashboard… more of a light blue instead of dark black and white.

That guide is for folks hosting their sites over at WordPress.com, not running the WordPress software on their own hosting – that’s why the dashboard is different.

Here’s a guide to creating a custom menu on self-hosted sites:
