    Hi There,

I’ve got multisite set up and new users are not assigned a role. I thought the default was subscriber. What setting am I missing to change this?

    Thanks So Much!

  • Hi
Give this plugin a try: Multisite User Management

After activating this plugin, change the role on the settings page:

Thanks for the fast reply, Abolfazi. I have looked into that plugin as a solution before posting here, but it doesn’t seem to be supported anymore and there are some users saying it doesn’t work. I will also eventually have hundreds of subsites, so managing it all w/ that plugin seems unnecessary.

I just need a way to add all new users as a subscriber, or find out what this new user is called so I can write some functions to hide dashboard items from them. if( !current_user_can('manage_options') ) doesn’t apply to them!

Also, didn’t WP MS used to add new users as subscribers by default or am I crazy?

I’m starting out but have you checked the setting for your multisite?

Login as network admin, goto dashboard->Sites.

Select an appropriate site and click the “Settings” tab. Then look for the setting for default role. If not what you want then change it to “subscriber” (use lowercase as that’s what WP recognises) and save it.

    Does this help?

I have the same issue with default roles for new users.

I have a development WordPress multisite network, but new users get no wordpress role attributed until manually changed to subscriber.
Logging in as network admin, dashboard -> Sites and Settings tab the default role is set to “subscriber” for each site, but the role still has to be manually assigned each time.
I would rather not use the Multisite User Management plug in as it seems to be no longer supported.
Has anyone found an alternative way around this?
