how to make it a CMS portal?

I am planning to use wordpress. Can I somebody tell me how to convert it to a CMS system?

My plan to pick some very important articles (like sticky topics), classify it and then publish on the home page, just like Mambo.

Is it possbible to do so? I am PHP and MySQL savvy but I have not looked at the code yet. Just wonder. I guess some sort of programming is needed.
