I am working on porting an existing html site to the wordpress platform and its going to take some time and work.

I would like to not only keep my blog private, but also if possible keep even the fact that a wp site is being developed on my site a secret.

The server and URL where I am installing the site is live. There is currently an index.html file in the public_html directory. Any attempt to view my wordpress site with the index.html file in place fails. When I remove that file, wordpress displays fine.

I would like to be able to leave the index.html file in place but be able to view and develop my wordpress site via a specific URL. I tried skimonline.net/index.php but that just redirected to the index.html file.

    Suggestions?

  • Hi skimonline,

One option to consider is the Maintenance Mode plugin. Once activated, non-logged in visitors will simply see a “splash page”. By default, the plugin uses maintenance-mode_site.php to display this splash page but includes an option to use your own. If so inclined, you can create your own file called 503.php and upload it to the active theme’s directory and use that file to display the splash page. Using your custom 503.php file you can make your splash page appear the way you want including calling a specific css file for it.
