• Installation went fine and I have a working site (on my home machine). Where do I start to make the site pretty? I mean, the default site looks “insipid”. I would like to make my website colorful like so many wordpress-sites. Any pointers in this direction will be deeply appreciated.

Modify the CSS stylesheet? default filename is wp-layout.css

Well half the fun and benefit of this forum is that the public nature of the exchange helps not only that individual (hopefully) but any other readers who may have a similar question. Where to start answering your question? You need to start editing (changing) one file which is called wp-layout.css. That controls the way your blog looks. Might I suggest respectfully that you spend a happy hour or two searching this forum and reading up all about it? Particularly the design section.
Secondly you say you are at home. I do not know what your circumstances are but as soon as you have a live install and a url then folks here can see what the heck you are up to and you will get as much help as you need. Welcome to WordPress. ??

ooh nice work podz… i mean it’s garish as hell but a useful resource for sure!

podz were you 12 seconds in front ? ??

    Yay !!!!!
    /me takes a bow ??

Nothing *garish* about it. That is *design* for you. ??

That was the answer I was looking for. I apologize for using the words “insipid” and “colorful”. I should have framed my question in a better way. I didn’t mean colorful in a way to make it colorful like https://www.mfr.f2s.com/1css/.
I am assuming that changing wp-layout.css will allow me to make the website look as I would like it to look–colors, layout, etc. Any other file/s that I should work with?
Once I am satisifed with the site, I will open up the port in my firewall for you all to check out my website and comment on. Or, maybe I will have it hosted somewhere before I will announce its availability here.
    Thanks for all your help.

Well – in general many folks are quite happy with editing their wp-layout.css. Other folks do like to tinker with index.php. Whatever takes your fancy.
