I have coloured text blocks, however I cannot seem to put the heading inside the block. So on the page linked for example the 2017 heading should be within the blue background block, and the 2018 heading should be in the grey block

I know I can have a group block, and can put headings and text blocks within that, but there seems to be no way to select the group block, I was wondering maybe I can give the group a background, but can find no way to do that as it doesn’t seem to be selectable

Please can someone tell me how to fix this, thanks

    Hello, voodoochill,

Yes, getting just the right hover position can be tricky, but there is another way to select the block you want. Up at the top of the editing screen, you will see a toolbar with the buttons for Preview and Publish or Update to the right. To the left of this toolbar is a circle with a plus sign for adding new blocks, undo and redo arrows, and what looks like three lines in a slanted layout. This is the button you want; it shows the blocks in your post or page in an outline layout. Click on this, then click on the block you want to edit (in this case your group). From there all the editing tools for that block are available.

I found that but not where you said it was in a different toolbar. But I found it eventually so thanks .

But there is a problem. After selecting a background colour for the group block, I can the select a text colour fot the heading and the text, but there si now no padding for the group ( or to put it another way, the headiung and tect have no margin so are butting up agaisnt the left hand side of the comtainer.

You can see that on the green box lower down on the page referenced above.

Is there something else I need to do?

    Thanks

I am wondering if there is a conflict with the margin settings on your social sharing buttons and the settings for the container. Could you try with a container that does not have anything else in it?

Good point, the social icons are now removed from that block and I have the same issue.

No doubt I could fix it with some CSS, but i was just hoping that with blocks now things can be a bit simpler and more workable and intuitive for non-techies.

Yes, you could fix it with CSS. In fact, I think that is what is going on here. When I test it on a dev site using the Twenty Nineteen theme there is padding within the group block. Using the inspector I turned the different classes of and on to see where the padding was being set. (Let me know if you are not familiar with the inspector)

If you have added custom CSS either in the customizer or in your child theme’s style sheet this could be a side effect. Or it could be like this in the style sheet of your theme, in which case you would need to add some custom CSS.
