I’m new to WordPress and am in the early stages of building a website on Local and Family History – two of my hobbies. I installed WordPress on my computer about a week ago – I’m that new!

There will be a page listing all local schools over the past two hundred years – it’s a very long list and I want to be able to click on each name, on that list, and, in each case, go to a page entirely dedicated to that school. Hope this makes sense – it seemed to when I wrote it!

I have tried looking at previous posts but don’t know what to search for.

    Thanks for any help.

    John

So you (1) need to create those individual school pages and (2) make your list. Do you want it to be automatic? That is, when you create the school page, a link is automatically added to the list?

Thanks sterndata, for your very quick reply! Yes, I think automatic links sound the best way for me to do it.

I did “reply” to the original email I received from sterndata but when I clicked on the link given in that email, I was brought here so I’m sending my reply again, just in case that’s what I should have done the first time.

To make it automatic, make “school” a custom post type. Then the page that lists the schools is the archive for that type, built on the template archive-school.php. Each school page is built on the template single-school.php

If you are not familiar with custom post types, the pods plugin is a good way to get started

To say I’m not familiar with custom post types is a massive understatement —- I really am that new! But I can learn, given time so I’ll have a look, later on today. It sounds interesting.

Thanks very much for your reply, sterndata.

I’m sorry C.T. but, honestly, I can’t understand what you’re asking me! Anyway, I’ve worked out how to do what I want.
